The Race is on 3

Good morning Mama's and Papa's little bloggers.

Before I begin on my last post, some of you sat there and thought I did not need to mention the last paragraph, I do need to mention that as adults who have a disability we can be selfish and self-centred especially if we have children who also have a disability because we think our needs our more important than the children and that's why I mentioned this paragraph.

Excercise: Firslty, I want you to write on two strips of separate peice of paper the following - on one write 5 year old blind Child, on the second write 5 year old disabled child with prosthetic limb on leg and then fold the small peice of paper put in a cup and shake it around and then take one out of the cup.

Secondly, the paper you pull out that is the child you are caring for, if you take out 5 year old blind child, that is the child you are caring for, if you take out child with prosthetic limb on leg that is the child you are caring for.

Thirdly, fast track forward in your mind 5 years and write down 5 things you would really like child to master well by the age of 10.

So if it is reading with braille write reading with braille

If it's spelling write spelling

If it's sports, write sports

If it's been able to build healthy relationships with friends write this

If it's been able to communicate well write communicate

Fourthly, now write the first 5 things you would do to really help this chid to achieve there goal by the age of 10.

So if it reading in braille what would be the first book or person you would contact to help you your child to read. If it is spelling as a parent what is the first book you buy to help them to spell, if you want your child to be sporty what is the first sport your child is good at a school

Remember the stages and development of helping this child to achieve each goal differs according to their ability.

The reason why I am giving you this excercise is because psychologist say the first 5 years of any child development is most important. So if thinking in increments of 5 years as a parent try and fast track every 5 years your childs progress and make sure each goal you write is achievable, measurable and realistic. This little excerices is useful in class especially for children who have siblings who have a disability they are caring for, showing them and teaching child about braille helps them to understand the world we live in.
